The term so far

This term we have done many activities in scouts  174th Derby such as:

13 October “Ready steady cook”

On these two consecutive weeks, we planned and made a two-course meal for our patrol and the leaders. The leaders are still debating on the results!!! We used ovens, stoves and many more normal household appliances to help in the future

20thOctober Coldets

We play Colditz twice a year. It is a game based on World War 2 prison camp in Germany. This was a high security prison in which allied soldiers were kept. What was so special about this camp? Only one prisoner was killed escaping out of hundreds. There were cases of prisoners attempting to escape up to 6 times. This prison is famous for being the escapee.  As you can probably guess, Coldets is a game where we spend half of scouts being the scout hut with traps and contractions.  Once this is done we go out side as the leaders make small changes.  When we go in the lights are off and we have to escape.  The leaders are axis Guards and wont care to stop you.  If they hear you and then recognise you will be stopped.

11thNovember remembrance parade

Each year we go to a range of parades.  This term we did a remembrance parade. We walked from Littleover social club to st peter’s church. The parade took 20 minutes and following it we went to the memorial cross.  After this we went to a hour long church service

9thNovember Bonfire Night

On the bonfire night we had many activities and food to raise money for the scout group. The scout group had a huge bonfire; safely we were kept away from the bonfire. Children from the surrounding area were playing in the grass as older kids lit supervised sparklers in the corners. There was hotdogs, nachos and many more sweets.  There was a tumbler wheel, air hockey table and football table for entertainment.  There were giant board games including Jenga and snakes and ladders for the younger ones.

Winter Weekend 2012

Winter weekend

We went on 10/02/12 to 12/02/12 As preparation for our adventure challenge, the winter of 2011, we went on a winter weekend in Rangemoor. The main activity was a large hike taking approximately half a day. We played sports as well, these sports included football, snowball fighting (with hardly any snow) and we also played pooh sticks at a random river we found on the colossal walk.We also watched a movie! The movie wasn’t very good. This was because the movie was boring at the start and by the time that everything had started to get interesting everybody was asleep. The actual walk we did was at spring bank 2012 (also long and tedious). Me (Jacob),Aidan, Milo and George were in one room and we had some sweets to share between us. I like it because it was really fun and I would love to go again. Fortunately we are going next year!!!!

Spring camp

We also went on spring bank and stayed till the Wednesday and at the end we had a firework display. Some of the activities included: the black hole, rifle shooting and abseiling. Every night we had a hot chocolate and a biscuit and it was lovely! We went on the 01/06/12 to 06/06/12

Spring Bank – 10/12th February 2012

February 10th 2012

The spring bank camp was amazing, considering how it rained most of the time. But the activities were very good because we all played things like sumo wrestling and also bought lots of sweets. In spring bank camp all of us made new friends especially Kye because on the 3rd day Kye had found himself a girlfriend( who by the way payed us with millions [sweets] to keep quiet about it but failed).

Most of us have had a brilliant time because later on in spring bank camp there was a Disco and all of us were at the front having the time of are life as we danced to many of are favourite songs with our new friends. There were fireworks after the disco, which were SMASHING!

On the last day we had an incredibly long walk which took hours but when we arrived back in camp- lets just say that everyone were incredibly thrilled and yet felt healthy at the same time. On the very last few hours of camp we said good bye to all of our new friends and packed away all of our clothes and rolled up our beds to get ready to go home and of course the weather was really confusing because it rained and yet sunny at the same time.

Bonfire Night 2011

Remember, remember the (4th) of November. The 174th Derby Scout Troop joined forces with the Brownies and Guides to hold our annual joint Bonfire Party in November this year.

We invited all of the Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, Rainbows, Brownies, Guides their friends and families to join us for the Bonfire party of the year! We had a bonfire (shocking) BBQ, Pizza, Hot Drinks, Cakes, a Quiz and a Tombola.

All funds raised have gone to the Scouts and Guides as a contribution to the day to day running costs of the groups.

We intend to carry out a similar event next year and welcome any suggestions for improvements.

Summer Camp 2009

Milldale Scout Campsite was the venue for our summer camp in 2009.  A site we have stayed at previously, it has good facilities (although no showers) and has a number of activities close by.

We weren’t so lucky with the weather, and suffered the worst Thunder Storms any of us had ever witnessed.  But the tents managed to withstand the downpours and we made it through the week in a relatively dry state.

Nevertheless we carried on regardless.  We did the following activities:

  • Rifle Shooting
  • Archery
  • Raft Building (and racing)
  • Backwoods cooking
  • Waterslide (x2)
  • Campfire
  • Trip to Waterworld in Stoke
  • Visited the local historic town of Newcastle-under-Lyme
  • Played rounders/ultimate frisbee/football/badminton
  • Pioneering
  • Cake making
  • Orienteering

We are already planning the camp for 2010 so watch this space!

Sailing 2009

We had not been Sailing for around 10 years with scouts, here are some of the highlights from the 6 week course.

During the first week the scouts learnt the basic principles of sailing before setting up their boats ready to go onto the water. When they did make it onto the water the scouts had mixed results with some spending more time in the water than in their boats.

After the previous week the scouts had extra tuition on how to steer the Toppers to gain the best from the weather conditions. Most of them grasped this and were sailing across the water at great speeds. It was all going well until the rain came and the winds picked up. Its fair to say the majority made good use of their spare set of clothes.

The remaining weeks were spent practicing their skills in order to reached the required standards to pass the course.  Not everyone was successful, but many showed a vast improvement and have a good foothold for the next time we go out on the water.

Spring Bank 2009

Both the Scouts and Cubs made the trip to Drum Hill Scout Campsite for this weekend camp.  Organised by Drum Hill it attracts, cubs, scouts and guides from across the country.

This activities based camp gave us the opportunity to try out a lots of new things including, Archery, Shooting, Go-Karting, Abseiling, Climbing, Crate Stacking, a wide range of craft activities and many, many more.

We all made the trip down the the Saturday Night Disco and Sunday Night’s talent show (although sadly we no-one entered from our troop).

Everyone has an awesome time, largely due to the fantastic weather and well organised activities.  We will definitely be visiting this camp again!

Winter Weekend 2009

After the trek down the long winding road we reached the campsite. After Settling in on the first night we pizza and chips we watched a DVD and went to bed.

The accommodation was ‘rustic’ and definitely without the usual home comforts, but the site is worth the sacrifice.

In the middle of no-where it is perfect for wide games, played at night these consist of attempting to reach a certain point without getting seen or heard.  We played for hours and got back to the hut thoroughly worn out.

We also went for a half day walk, and completed a home made orienteering course.  We also played some outdoor team games to pass the time.

Given the cold we did some indoor games such as balloon tag and there were a few hands of cards dealt during the course of the weekend.

The weekend was enjoyable, and we know where to find it for next time! (maybe!)

Summer Camp 2008

Bromsgrove,

In contrast to this years freezing cold winter camp, it was a scorcher for the first four days of summer camp.  We made the most of the weather and went swimming in the outdoor pool on sit (twice!) and spent a whole day cooking on open fires (on the hottest day, probably not the brightest idea!) and made our own waterslide.

And then the rain came!  It seems to be a running theme with our summer camps, however, we all donned the waterproofs and got on with it.  We spent an afternoon on the zip wire, went out on a days hike in the surrounding area and did another waterslide (well, we were wet anyway so it seemed logical at the time).

All in all it was an enjoyable camp, and it is a site we will definitely visit again!

Activities on this camp included: –

Grass Sledging
Water Polo
Backwards cooking
Pioneering
Day Walk
Climbing
Zip Wire
Swimming

And may other smaller camping activities

Winter Weekend 2008

During 2008 the Troop attended Drum Hill Camp Site in Derby, this is the local campsite for our troop.

The activities that we did included :-

Assault course
Hot Air Balloons
Indoor Games

It was one of the coldest camps that we have been on with the temperature often dropping below 0c. This meant most of out activities were inside. We had a good turnout for this particular camp and proved a good taster for the Summer Camp.
